I am passionate about taking unique culinary journeys, and this desire was realized at The MKT in the Heights, where I discovered a hidden gem without ever having to leave Houston. Located in a spectacular location, Da Gama is surrounded by trails, shopping delights, and pulsating nightlife. I was not only treated to a variety of delectable dishes while dining at Da Gama, but I was transported to the enchanting world of Goa, the former Portuguese-Indian territory on the western coast of India.

Goa, with its rich history as a Portuguese colony from 1510 to 1961, stands as a testament to the cultural fusion that ensued. This coastal paradise became a vital center for the Eastern spice trade during the Portuguese rule and served as the capital of the Portuguese Empire east of the Cape of Good Hope for nearly five centuries. Da Gama pays homage to this historical blend of influences by highlighting the very spices that once flowed through Goa’s ports. It’s a culinary journey that captures the essence of a bygone era.
The menu at Da Gama is a labor of love, a reflection of the passion and dedication of the husband and wife duo behind the establishment, who also own Oporto and the now-closed Queen Vic. To kickstart my exploration of this culinary adventure, I began with a trio of appetizers. The chicken samosas immediately won my heart with their crispy exterior and flavorful curried chicken filling. Generously stuffed with potato, chickpeas, and green peas, they were served alongside a cooling raita yogurt sauce. Each bite was a delightful burst of Indian flavors.
Next on the journey was the 3 chili paneer, a dish adorned with roasted peppers, curry, cashews, and raita yogurt sauce. While it was enjoyable, it left me yearning for a touch more excitement to elevate it to greatness. However, the true star of this appetizer showcase was the Crab Pani Puri. It was a symphony of textures and flavors that left me in awe. The crab meat was delicately stuffed into a semolina shell, remarkably light and crispy. Accompanied by a cilantro chutney and orange coconut pani, it offered a slightly sweet complexity that was nothing short of spectacular.
Transitioning to heartier fare, the Assado de Bife arrived at our table. This wood-grilled, spice-crusted hanger steak, complemented by a buttery curry and sweet potato, provided a satisfying experience. While it didn’t quite reach the realm of spectacular, it was undeniably skillfully prepared. In contrast, the Goan Fish Curry stole the spotlight. This medley of halibut, shrimp, lump crab meat, and creamy coconut curry masala was a harmonious blend of flavors. It paid homage to Goan cuisine’s heavy emphasis on seafood and was a testament to the restaurant’s dedication to authenticity.
The Bullet Naan was an excellent accompaniment, especially when paired with the Fish Curry sauce. The spicy bullet butter gave it a unique kick, enhancing the already delightful combination of a crisp exterior and a fluffy interior. As our culinary journey reached its sweet finale, the sticky date cake took center stage. An exquisite creation infused with ginger spice, dulce de leche caramel, and brûléed bananas, every decadent bite was a testament to the dessert’s excellence.
Da Gama’s cocktail selection offered a variety of interesting options. While the Goan Sunset leaned a bit too heavily into sweetness for my palate, the Blue Smoke emerged as a clear favorite. This Mezcal margarita, accented with ginger, aloe vera liqueur, and blueberries, was a masterpiece of balance and refreshment. The restaurant’s eclectic and diverse wine list, available by the bottle and by the glass, featured some unique orange wines and red wines on draft, catering to a wide range of tastes.
In conclusion, Da Gama is more than just a restaurant; it’s a culinary gem that transports you on a fusion-filled odyssey. The seamless blending of Indian and Portuguese influences tantalizes the taste buds and enchants the senses. The dedication to detail, the creative cocktail repertoire, and the inviting ambiance all culminate in a memorable dining escapade. While the service, at times, lagged in plate clearance, it didn’t take away from an overall enjoyable experience. With its well-deserved 4 out of 5 crowns, Da Gama is a destination where culinary dreams of Goa come to life, even for those of us who have yet to visit the real Goa.
